The first Tuesday we went downtown, we brought forty sandwiches and zero relationships. We handed out food, felt good, and drove home. By any metric it was a success — except the one that mattered. Nobody knew our names, and we knew none of theirs.
So we changed the assignment. Same night, same sandwiches — but now the goal was to learn one person's story each week. We met veterans, runaways, grandmothers, and a retired teacher who now lives in his car and still corrects our grammar. We stopped counting sandwiches and started counting friends.
Two years in, the ministry looks less like a program and more like a parish. We celebrate birthdays under the overpass. We drive people to job interviews and dentist appointments. Three of our Tuesday friends now serve alongside us on the team — which tells you everything about which direction grace flows.
Dignity is not complicated. It is a name remembered, a chair offered, and a church that keeps showing up after the novelty wears off. Join us any Tuesday. Bring comfortable shoes and stay for the stories.
